The Magic of Film: Why I Turned to Super8

When I started photography, I knew that I was captivated by storytelling. However, what I really fell in love with as time went on was the fact that my art could invoke nostalgia – the kind of nostalgia that fills that aching hole in your chest that I think we’ve all felt for a long time. I never planned on getting into videography but I knew that Super8 and film photography felt like a family I wanted to be apart of. I jumped into film photography head first and fell in love with it: the colors, the texture, the energy. It completely transformed my business for the better. But when I jumped into Super8, it completely transformed me.

As a photographer, my work revolves around capturing still images, moments frozen in time. But there’s something about film – specifically Super8 – that adds a whole new layer to storytelling. I started experimenting with Super8 videography because I wanted to create something that felt more like a memory than a recording. A Super8 film isn’t just a video; it’s an emotional artifact. It can capture the intangible – the quiet moments, the small gestures, and even the fleeting emotions that often go unnoticed. When you watch a Super8 film, it’s about feeling the experience again. There’s beauty in the imperfection of it all – the slight shakes, the pops and cracks of the film, the soft hues and glowing grain. It makes the experience feel more real – more raw.

Small Moments Deserve Big Memories

Most people save professional photo and video for the big moments – weddings, pregnancy announcements, milestone events. But what I’ve realized over time is that the small moments, the everyday experiences, deserve to be celebrated and preserved just as much. Super8 is perfect for capturing those quieter, more intimate memories that you might otherwise overlook.

Maybe it’s a Sunday morning spent sipping coffee with a loved on. Or the memory of your child running through the backyard with the dogs she will grow up with. These are the memories that often fade with time, but when captured on film, they feel eternal. Super8 can turn these fleeting, small moments into something tangible – something cinematic. Super8 is something you can revisit year after year and feel the same warmth, the same joy, the same love you felt in that instant. These moments may not always feel as grand as a wedding or a massive celebration, but they hold immeasurable value. Super8 video immortalizes these times in a way that nothing else can, turning them into vivid, emotional treasures.

Big Moments, Bigger Impact

Now with all of that being said…imagine the magic of watching the big moments through Super8’s warm lens. The grainy, nostalgic moments of your first kiss on your wedding day. The joy of your loved ones finding out your having a baby. The warmth of your friend’s laughter at your milestone birthday party. The feel of film itself is a timeless, tangible reminder of one of the most significant days of your life. In fact, these moments can often feel even more emotional when viewed through the lens of film. It’s as if time is suspended, yet alive, and every second is cherished.

What makes Super8 videography stand out in these big moments is it authenticity. Unlike polished, high-definition video, Super8 embraces imperfections. The slight flicker, the rich color tones, and the soft focus enhance the rawness of the moment. It’s the unspoken beauty of an experience. It’s not about perfection – it’s about connection.
