How I Planned a Maternity Session That Went TikTok Viral

I’m just a girl…and I love TikTok. I got hooked back in 2020 and finally started posting my photography on it more consistently in 2024, so when I watched one of my videos break my normal 400-500 views to 800,000+ I honestly screamed. Little ‘ole me has a somewhat viral TikTok! Who would’ve thought? And over a maternity session?! Insane. I’ve always been known for my creative maternity sessions, but I never in a million years thought that one of my sessions would reach so many other moms and photographers who felt inspired by it! So let’s break down how I planned this edgy, creative maternity session and why I think going outside of the norm is the way to go.

First things first…

I am always thinking of ways that we can turn your maternity session (or any session for that matter) into a more creative photoshoot. Maternity photography is a beautiful way to celebrate bringing new life and while traditional maternity sessions have their timeless charm, opting for a creative approach can elevate the experience and the resulting images can be truly magical. Imagine your kid looking at these photos and thinking…”Wow…my parents were really cool.”

The planning process…

When Ryann reached out to me for her second maternity session, we knew that we had already done the normal, timeless maternity photos for her first baby. Been there, done that. We wanted to do a creative maternity photoshoot that allowed her to express her unique personality and the “cool mom” aesthetic that she really brings to the table. We chatted through what her pregnancy was like and gas station snacks were her ULTIMATE craving. So we took it and ran with it.

Enhancing the Artistic Vision

Creative maternity photoshoots can incorporate elements that tell a story or evoke emotions…or they can center around the fact that you have a toddler who likes to wreak havoc in the backseat of your SUV and is obsessed with stickers. I think what’s so amazing about personal expression is that it’s personal. Leaning into the chaos of motherhood encourages playfulness and spontaneity. With the opportunity to express yourself, break norms, and create lasting memories, a creative maternity session lets you tell a story that resonates with you.
